BOUNCING RACISM OUT OF SPORT

Football leagues and clubs, like all other organisations, can be held responsible for acts of racial vilification. Football is recognised as a leader in addressing racial and religious vilification in sport, with the AFL being the first sporting body in this country to introduce rules against racism in 1995.

The Worksafe VCFL offers the BROOS program to its affiliates. The program is a four-part set of user friendly resources designed to assist leagues and clubs to create a more tolerant football environment and remove any potential barriers to participation. Resources include league and club guidelines; a player, official and spectator video; sample league and club policies; and a presenter’s guide.

  •  This program is run within your club/association

Who should attend – Whole club (Players, Club Executives, Supporters, Members)

GOAL ASSIST

The Goal Assist program is about using positive role models to improve the lives of young people from rural Victoria.

The program will identify role models within the local football club and offer to train them to be mentors. This will enhance capacity and generate social capital by creating partnerships and increase community involvement.

A critical component of the program will be the use of well-trained AFL role models.

Their role will be to take training for junior teams, facilitating life skill sessions at the end of training. They will visit schools where mentored young people attend. They will conduct a seminar for parents about the role of sport in assisting young people. Young people who are participating in the program will be able to visit an AFL club and meet players and officials.

The code of conduct enables clubs to implement a proven program for promoting positive spectator behaviours which encourages young people to continue participating in football and supports officials and umpires in their role of encouraging participation in sport.

AFL Kids First is structured as a self implementation program for clubs with an explanatory DVD, brochures and signage for display around the club. Policy implementation information is also distributed to each club.

Resources are distributed to leagues at the start of the season by WorkSafe VCFL Area Managers. Further information on the program and its implementation is available through VCFL Area Managers and Junior Football Manager.

He will be able to share his story and talk to young people about the problems that they are facing with school and in a social environment. He is available to talk to small or large groups, schools or clubs and will fit into what is needed for your community.

DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM

As we all know the scourge of drugs within society is an ongoing and growing problem. In conjunction with the Victorian Police (Purana Taskforce), and the Australian Sports Anti Doping Authority (ASADA), the VCFL has developed a Drug Education Program which educates everyone about the effects of drugs.

This program alerts individuals about the dangers of illicit and performance enhancing drugs. The Program is delivered in two phases – 1. Illicit drugs and 2. Performance enhancing drugs.

  1. The Purana Taskforce provides a presentation which outlines all the different types of illicit drugs. They will outline what effects these drugs have on the individual taking drugs and how it affects their families and friends around them. They will also outline what risks are involved with taking these drugs and how to recognise when someone is on drugs.
  1. ASADA will deliver a presentation about certain types of performance enhancing drugs and what adverse effects they can have on people taking these drugs. They will also outline the risks and consequences that these types of drugs have.

If you want more information about these presentations please contact your Area Manager

This program is also available on an individual club basis to a limited amount of clubs. If your club thinks this will benefit the young people within your club please contact your Area Manager.
