Safely Driving Country Football
Through the support of a Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Community Road Safety Grant the WorkSafe VCFL was able to use its various points of contact to liaise with country sporting people (leagues, clubs, players and volunteers) to determine what they believe to be the key road safety issues around their clubs.
To see the most common perceived safe driving issues around football netball clubs and the resources available to target these issues click here.

WORKING WITH THE MEDIA
LIFE SKILLS
These are a range of programs that seek to provide important personal skills to individuals and groups that will aid them with their decision making, positive choices, and potential in life.
BOUNCING RACISM OUT OF SPORT
Football leagues and clubs, like all other organisations, can be held responsible for acts of racial vilification. Football is recognised as a leader in addressing racial and religious vilification in sport, with the AFL being the first sporting body in this country to introduce rules against racism in 1995.
The Worksafe VCFL offers the BROOS program to its affiliates. The program is a four-part set of user friendly resources designed to assist leagues and clubs to create a more tolerant football environment and remove any potential barriers to participation. Resources include league and club guidelines; a player, official and spectator video; sample league and club policies; and a presenter’s guide.
- This program is run within your club/association
Who should attend – Whole club (Players, Club Executives, Supporters, Members)
Duration – 1 Hour
LOOKING AFTER OUR MATES
LAOM is a program that is offered to all WorkSafe VCFL affiliates in conjunction with Roadsafe on acting responsibly with regard to drinking alcohol and driving, riding or operating machinery. The program stresses the responsibility that all must take to ensure they look after themselves and their mates where alcohol is concerned.
The program will discuss strategies such as not engaging in drink driving, provide an overview about the statistics involving drink driving, advise about the effects of alcohol on the body, all about responsible drinking and give demonstrations relating to alcohol in certain situations.
Who should attend – Whole club (Players, Club Executives, Supporters, Members)
Duration – 1 Hour
GOAL ASSIST
The Goal Assist program is about using positive role models to improve the lives of young people from rural Victoria.
The program will identify role models within the local football club and offer to train them to be mentors. This will enhance capacity and generate social capital by creating partnerships and increase community involvement.
A critical component of the program will be the use of well-trained AFL role models.
Their role will be to take training for junior teams, facilitating life skill sessions at the end of training. They will visit schools where mentored young people attend. They will conduct a seminar for parents about the role of sport in assisting young people. Young people who are participating in the program will be able to visit an AFL club and meet players and officials.
- This program is run within your club/association
Who should attend – Junior Players and Senior Players
Duration – On going.
AFL KIDS FIRST PROGRAM
The AFL Kids First program is to be implemented within all WorkSafe VCFL Affiliated leagues and clubs that provide football at under 16 level or younger.
AFL Kids First provides a code of conduct for parents and all spectators at junior football matches. The code of conduct enables clubs to implement a proven program for promoting positive spectator behaviours which encourages young people to continue participating in football and supports officials and umpires in their role of encouraging participation in sport.
AFL Kids First is structured as a self implementation program for clubs with an explanatory DVD, brochures and signage for display around the club. Policy implementation information is also distributed to each club.
Resources are distributed to leagues at the start of the season by WorkSafe VCFL Area Managers. Further information on the program and its implementation is available through VCFL Area Managers and Junior Football Manager.
Who should attend – Parents
Duration – 30 minutes
BACK TO GRASS ROOTS
The WorkSafe VCFL in conjunction with Andrews Airport Parking offers an ambassador program. The Back to Grass Roots Program is designed to allow young people in country areas to have an insight into how AFL stars of today got involved in football and there journey.
The program utilises the services of a high profile recently retired AFL player. This player is a WorkSafe VCFL ambassador and will visit remote regional areas of Victoria.
He will be able to share his story and talk to young people about the problems that they are facing with school and in a social environment. He is available to talk to small or large groups, schools or clubs and will fit into what is needed for your community.
Who should attend – Whole club (Players, Club Executives, Supporters, Members), and Community.

DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM
Drugs
Drugs have been used by almost all human societies for both medical and social purposes. Legal drugs include tobacco, caffeine, alcohol and prescription medications. Illegal or illicit drugs include cannabis (marijuana), amphetamines (speed, ice), ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and others.
People who use drugs are usually seeking a pleasurable experience, or they may be just curious. Sometimes, they are trying to enhance performance, deal with unpleasant feelings or bad memories, or they are trying to fit in with a particular group of friends. Whatever the reason, drug problems and drug related harms can occur from the use of any drug. Some drug use has also been linked to mental health problems like anxiety, depression or psychosis, and may make those problems worse.
Parents and Sporting Clubs can play an important role in preventing a young person’s uptake of drugs. Providing good supervision, accurate and balanced information, and being available for support is likely to help young people make better decisions about drug use and enhance their ability to learn and perform in sporting activities.
Is that true?
· 23% of 14-19 year olds have used an illicit drug at some time
- Cannabis use has decreased since 2004
· Over one million Australians (14 years or older) have used methamphetamines at least once in their lifetime
- Ecstasy use has more than tripled since 1995
- Tobacco smoking is the single most preventable cause of ill health and death
(AIHW – 2007 National Drug Strategy Household Survey)

BINGE DRINKING
Binge Drinking
Drinking alcohol to intoxication is often called Binge Drinking. Many Australians enjoy alcohol in a safe way by limiting their intake to one or two drinks. However, each time you drink you are at risk of harming yourself or those around you and of doing something you later regret. The risks associated with drinking alcohol become much greater when consuming more than FOUR standard drinks on one occasion.
Parents and Sporting Clubs can play an important role by setting drinking limits and by modeling responsible drinking behavior and attitudes. Current advice is that young people under 18 years of age shouldn’t drink any alcohol. Delaying the age at which a young person starts drinking is the safest option and will enhance their ability to learn and perform in sporting activities.
Is that true?
· Every week, 4 young Australians under 25 years of age will die from an alcohol-related injury and 70 will be hospitalized from an alcohol-related assault.
· Alcohol misuse costs Australians over 15 billion dollars each year
· Around 90% of Australians over 14 years of age have tried alcohol
· Risky drinking and hospital admissions by 12-17 year olds has doubled in the last 20 years
· Over 80% of alcohol use by young people aged 14-17 years is consumed in high risk ways
